40th Annual Sportsman 100

ABBOTTSTOWN, PA, 9/13/14

Written by: Bill Meyer

Frankie Herr continues to rewrite the super sportsman record books. From his fourth starting spot, Herr led 32 laps early, and then led the final 39 to record his seventh win in the prestigious 40th Annual Lawrence Chevrolet Sportsman 100 at Lincoln Speedway Saturday night.

Herr chased down outside frontrow starter and race long leader Mike Enders to take his first lead on lap 16 and paced the field through lap 48. Polesitter Gregg Foster had stayed with the leaders, Herr and Enders, through the first half of the 100 lap event and raced by Enders for second on lap 48 and then by Herr for the lead a lap later on lap 49.

Herr and Enders stayed with the race-leading Foster as the top-three raced though lapped traffic just past the halfway point of the 100-lap marathon. Herr got back around Foster for the lead on lap 61 and paced the field to the 70-lap break with Enders and 17th-starting Russ Mitten both keeping pace as the 70th-lap caution, signaled the break in the action.

All teams then headed to the pits for 10 minutes to work on their cars at the 70th lap break in the action’

But nobody had anything for Herr over the final 30-laps as he extended a 3-second lead to 9.53 seconds over the final 10 laps and took the checkered over eighth-starting Chad Criswell and Mitten for his second consecutive Sportsman 100 victory.

Enders, and 20th-starting Carmen Perigo, Jr. completed the top-five.

Rounding out the top10 were Doug Dodson, Bobby Hockenberry, Chad Smith, Paul Miller and Leroy Martin.

Early race contender Scott Geesey was running third when it appeared something broke on his can and turned hard into the third and fourth turn wall on lap 39 and flipped. Geesey was uninjured .

Including lap money, Herr took home $5,138 for his dominating performance which saw him lead 71 of the 100 laps run.

Super Sportsman qualifiers were won by Chad Smith and Tom Wykoff, with Devin Beidel winning the last chance race. Fast time in time trials over the 36-car field was Chad Criswell with a new one-lap track record time of 15.083-seconds (89.209 MPH).
