COMING UP Saturday September 2nd at BAPS Motor Speedway is the 49th running of the Gary Wolford SUPER SPORTSMAN 100 Sponsored by Herr's Chips & Presented by Drydene! The Meyer's RV Super Sportsman will go 100 laps for a $4,000 payday and a chance to get their name in the record books beside drivers like Fred Putney, Larry Jackson & Rich Eichelberger to name a few.
This tradition started back in 1975 at Silver Spring Speedway where Fred Putney took the first checkered in this great event. This would be Putney's only victory in the 100. So far, we've had 22 different drivers put their name in the history books for this event. At the top of the all-time win list is Frankie Herr with 9 wins followed by Scott Dellinger (5), Larry Jackson (4), Dwight Leib (4) & Johnny Murphy (3). Dellinger is the only active driver in the top 5 win list for the 100. The next active driver on the list is Russ Mitten in 10th with 2 wins in this event.
Mitten got his 1st career SPORTSMAN 100 victory in 2021. He then back it up with winning last year's 100 (2022). In the history of the 100, only 8 drivers have gone back-to-back years winning this historical event. Drivers the likes of John Murphy (77-78), Deight Lieb (86-87), Larry Jackson (88-89), Howie Locke (90-91) Frankie Herr twice (96-97, 13-14), Dave Neuman (02-03), Scott Dellinger (18-19) and of course Russ Mitten (21-22). Mitten could be the first driver in history to go 3 in a row for the 100.
Another fun fact, out of the 22 different driver that have won this event only 2 our currently active drivers, Russ Mitten & Scott Dellinger. So, the chances of a NEW Sportsman 100 winner are strong, but you can never count out Mitten or Dellinger. Dellinger has already scored one win on the season so far and Mitten has been in the top 6 in his last two appearances.
BUT we got to talk about the "Young Blood" in the Sportsman division. You can never count out Kenny Edkin. He has been strong in the past few years and is your current Meyer's RV Super Sportsman Series points leader. What about Tyler Wolford...? Tyler put on a great show this past Sunday at the SUNDAY SUPER SHOWDOWN and dominated the first half of the feature.
All in all, this year's 49th Annual Gary Wolford Super Sportsman 100 looks to be an awesome event as always.
More info to come, stay tuned... WE'LL SEE YOU AT THE RACES!!
